Gerhard Richter was born in 1932 in Dresden，Germany. Originally trained in a realist style，Richter later developed an appreciation for the more progressive work of his American and European contemporaries. Richter increasingly employed his own painting as a means of exploring how images that appear to capture “truth” often prove，on extended viewing，far less objective，or unsure in meaning，than originally assumed. The other common themes in his work are the elements of chance，and the play between realism and abstraction. Working alongside but never fully embracing a quick succession of late twentieth century art movements，such as Abstract Expressionism，American/British Pop art，Minimalism，and Conceptualism，Richter has absorbed many of their ideas while remaining skeptical of all grand artistic and philosophical credos.
Editioned works are a central part of Richter’s oeuvre，engaging
the ideas of seriality and repetition at the heart of his practice. A prime example of his editions，this work has been shown at key exhibitions of the artist’s work，such as “Gerhard Richter: The Editions” at Folkwang Museum，Essen，Germany in 2007； “Gerhard Richter in Dallas Collections” at Dallas Museum of Art，USA in 2000 ，and “From the Hand to the Head，the Theoretical Object” at Centre d’Art Contemporain，Bignan，France in 1993.
The unusual choice of picture carrier bears testimony to the influence of music on the artist’s work，which he listens to in his studio on a regular basis. In his notes of 1984，the artist comments on the intense preoccupation with Glen Gould’s jazz adaption of Johann Sebastian Bach: “Glenn Gould，Goldberg Variations. I have been listening to hardly anything else for almost a year. What is starting to bother me，is the perfection. The totally absurd，boring，malicious perfection. No wonder that he died early. I should listen to the radio.”

抽象表现主义与新表现主义
